“SHAVE IT OFF” to raise money to support Sussex hospices
On Tuesday 24th January, Henry Brooks, chef of the Laughing Fish at Isfield, celebrated his 30th birthday by shearing the beard! Alongside Henry was his bar manager James Pearson whose long red whiskers—his pride and joy—also went under the razor and the treasured tresses ended up in a radiant pile on the floor accompanying the beards of pub regulars Dan Johnson and Barry Fraser.
Brandishing the razor was hairdresser Lauren Durrant who donated her time and talent for the charity.
Henry and friends hope that this amazing gesture will encourage others to follow suit and make a small sacrifice to make a big difference.
Henry said: “This all started after a few beers at our monthly pub quiz with a couple of my friends and family trying to convince me that it was time to lose the beard. “Much to the surprise of everybody, including myself, I agreed and with my 30th birthday only a few months away, it seemed a great idea to tie it in.“As soon as we mentioned it to a few other people, we had other willing candidates to face the razor and raise some funds.
“The Laughing Fish has supported FSH for some time, with annual inclusion in the Mad March Pub Quiz, (which takes place on Sunday 5 March this year) and the Isfield Beer Race, run every Easter Monday, so they were the obvious charity to support.”
After shedding his whiskers, and several glasses of restorative beer, Henry said: “I’m absolutely chuffed with the turn-out tonight and the support from all my friends”.
James challenged the assembled crowd to raise £100 to include his head of hair in the shave off. Needless to say within a few minutes £150 was in the hat and the picture tells the story. James said “I’m very sorry to have lost my gorgeous head of hair, however it’s for a very good cause and it was fabulous to receive so much support”
At the end of the evening over £1,300 was raised and more donations are expected to come in, in the coming week . It’s not too late to sponsor Henry Brooks and friends:
